In the 1960′s, James Benko was active in the U.S. teaching Hakko-ryu Jujutsu. Mr. Benko introduced Hakko-ryu to the United States. During the early 1960′s, Michael LaMonica began training in Hakko-ryu JuJutsu. In 1975, Mr. Okuyama invited Mr. LaMonica to live with them as a special disciple. At the completion of this study, Mr. LaMonica was awarded the license of Master Instructor. In 1979, Mr. LaMonica was the first non-Japanese to receive the rank of Sandai Kichu, the highest rank in Hakko-ryu JuJutsu.
In 1997, August 5th at the Eighth Light dojo in Akron Ohio, the Hakko Denshin Ryu JuJutsu Federation was formed to help preserve the origianl teachings of Shodai Soke Okuyama, the founder of Hakko-Ryu. It has three directors. Irie Shihan in Saitama City for Japan and Asia, Garcia Shihan in Hasselt Belgium for Europe and LaMonica Shihan in Akron for North and South America.
